WARE
Sports and exercising is good
for you, but a sports injury can happen to all types of athletes, treatment on
the field and proper emergency care is the key to good outcomes according to
Richard Gerstein, Medical Director of the Baystate Mary Lane Hospital Emergency
Services.
Dr. Gerstein joined by Mark
Tuttle, Medic and Nurse Manager of Baystate Mary Lane Hospital Emergency
Department will present a program for coaches and parents on Tuesday, June 23
from 6 to 7:30 p.m .in the hospitalÕs Main Conference Room.
The program ÒOne for the
TeamÓ will teach proper care of sports injuries and emergencies on the
field.
ÒBeing prepared to handle
injuries and emergencies on the field is the key to good outcomes. Proper treatment of concussions, heat
exhaustion spinal injuries and anaphylaxis and when to seek emergency medial
care is important for everyone on and off the field,Ó said Richard Gerstein,
MD.
According to the National
Institutes of Health, in the United States, about 30 million children and teens
participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million
injuries occur each year. Almost one-third of all injuries incurred in
childhood are sports-related injuries. By far, the most common injuries are
sprains and strains and obviously, some sports are more dangerous than
others. However, all types of
sports have a potential for injury, whether from the trauma of contact with
other players or from overuse or misuse of a body part.
According to Gerstein, ÒThe
best method of dealing with pediatric and adolescent sports injuries should
begin with prevention; athletes should wear protective gear at all times. If an injury does occur the first thing
to do is to prevent further injury or damage. This means you should stop activity, look for the cause of
the injury, start immediate treatment and call for emergency medical care when
necessary.Ó
Community members, especially
coaches and parents are encouraged to attend this informative seminar,
refreshment will be served.
Registration is required by calling Baystate Health Link at 967-2488 or
